Aerosmith est un groupe de hard rock américain, créé à Boston au début des années 1970, et qui a connu un regain de popularité à partir de la fin des années 1980 et au début des années 1990. Leur musique est un hard rock typique des années 1970, mais qui reste tout de même proche de ses racines blues. Vers la fin des années 1960, Steven Tyler, un jeune batteur de Boston, rencontre le guitariste Joe Perry dans la boutique d'un marchand de glaces du New Hampshire. Ensemble ils forment d'abord le Jam Band, un power trio à la Cream, avec le bassiste Hamilton. Un second guitariste, Whitford, puis un batteur, Kramer, se joignent à eux, Tyler se consacrant au chant. Aerosmith est né. L'été 1970 le groupe se rode à The Barn, une boîte du New Hampshire, touchant un cachet de trente dollars par soir. Un bon bouche à oreille lui permet de se fixer à Boston, où il joue dans le circuit des bars du campus. Un noyau de fans le suit déjà dans tous ses déplacements. Épaté par son passage explosif au Max's Kansas City de New York, Clive Davis, le patron de Columbia lui offre un contrat en 1972. Un premier album (sans titre) au rock brut, primaire et mélodieux, incluant une reprise de Rufus Thomas, sort début 1973. Les ventes sont modestes, et le succès en 45 tours de la ballade "Dream On" reste régional. De même pour le second Get Your Wings (1974) qui compte une reprise des Yardbirds ("Train Kept A Rollin'"). Le groupe accompagne en tournée Blue Öyster Cult, Mott The Hoople et les Kinks, conquérant un public de plus en plus vaste. "Toys In The Attic" (1975), avec ses quatre millions d'exemplaires vendus, met le feu aux poudres. Aux États-Unis, Aerosmith emplira vite les stades, faisant jeu égal avec Kiss et Journey.
