Crystal Castles est le nom d'un duo torontois formé en par Ethan Kath et Alice Glass. Le nom du groupe, « Crystal Castles », vient d'un château fictif dans le dessin animé She-Ra la Princesse du pouvoir et non du jeu vidéo sur Atari 8-bit. Formé en décembre 2003 par Ethan Kath comme projet, il demande en avril 2005 à Alice Glass d'enregistrer des chants pour cinq morceaux. Le premier single du groupe fut enregistré « accidentellement » : un test de micro d'Alice Glass fut mis en ligne sur Myspace en septembre 2005 sous le nom d'« Alice Practice ». Alice Glass n'était pas au courant que le test avait été mis en musique jusqu'à ce que des maisons de disques entendent la chanson et prennent contact avec le groupe pour proposer un contrat. Depuis la sortie d'"Alice Practice", le groupe avait fait part du projet de sortir un album sur le label Last Gang Records, ce qui fut réalisé le 18 mars 2008 aux États-Unis et le 28 avril en Angleterre. Les Crystal Castles ont fait de nombreuses tournées en Europe et aux États-Unis depuis 2006 avec entre autre une tournée américaine en compagnie du groupe de musique électronique australien The Presets en 2007. Le groupe a aussi joué en août 2007 aux festivals de Reading et de Leeds en Angleterre et était au programme du festival CMJ d'octobre 2007. Ethan et Alice ont eu quelque dates communes avec Metric pendant leur tournée nord-américaine de septembre et octobre 2007. Ils étaient têtes d'affiche de Unitaur, la tournée britannique de novembre 2007 du Vice Magazine en compagnie des These New Puritans et The Teenagers.
