Description of the artist Louis Armstrong
Louis Daniel Armstrong (4 août 1901 – 6 juillet, 1971) (prononcer « Louis » à la française, que lui même écrivait Louie par hypercorrection), aussi connu sous les surnoms de Satchmo (pour satchel-mouth, littéralement bouche-sacoche) ou Pops, était un musicien américain de jazz. Réputé charismatique, innovant et possédant un talent musical exceptionnel, il transforma le jazz du statut d’une musique régionale peu connue en un courant culturel populaire. Étant probablement le musicien de jazz le plus célèbre du XXe siècle, il fut tout d’abord reconnu pour ses qualités de trompettiste avant de développer au fil de sa carrière des aptitudes au chant et ainsi devenir l’un des chanteurs de jazz les plus influents de son époque. Louis Armstrong était, comme on dit, un « brave homme », d’une remarquable générosité. Au point d’adopter le fils de sa cousine Flora disparue peu après sa naissance. Il ne cessera de prendre soin de Clarence Armstrong, handicapé mental, à qui il assurera une rente à vie. Né le 4 Août 1901 dans une famille pauvre de la Nouvelle Orléans, Louis Armstrong vit son enfance marquée par l'absence de son père : William Armstrong, qui abandonna son fils ainsi que sa petite famille alors que le futur grand trompettiste était encore tout jeune. En grandissant dans un quartier difficile, il fut plusieurs fois envoyé, en raison d’actes de délinquance, dans un foyer pour enfants de couleur abandonnés : le Home for Colored Waifs. Il y fit notamment un long séjour suite (selon les fichiers de la police) à un coup de feu tiré en l’air avec un pistolet, tout simplement pour fêter la nouvelle année.
