Marvin Pentz Gay Jr naît le 2 avril 1939 à Washington, DC. Fils de pasteur, il fréquente régulièrement l'église, où il s'exerce à la musique en chantant et en pratiquant le piano et la batterie. Ainsi la musique est devenue une échappatoire à la vie cauchemardesque qui régne alors dans son foyer (son père le battait régulièrement). Au cours de son adolescence, il intègre plusieurs groupes comme The Rainbows, The Moonglows ou The Marquees. Il fera ainsi la rencontre d'Harvey Fuqua, un producteur qui aura une forte influence sur lui. Cependant Marvin Gaye se détache peu à peu de ces groupes en enregistrant quelques titres qui n'obtiendront jamais de succès. Le déclic se produit en 1961, l'année où il parvient à être signé par la maison de disque Motown et rencontre les plus grandes stars de la soul. Le patron du label, Berry Gordy, le prend sous son aile. Marvin débute avec la sortie des simples Can I Get A Witness, Hitch Hike et Price And Joy. Mais c'est en 1964, année de sortie de son premier album, que le succès explose. Il collabore par la suite avec Tammi Terrell et Diana Ross entre autres. Les États-Unis sont séduits par ce nouvel artiste plein de charisme doté d'une voix mélodieuse. En 1968, la célébrissime chanson I Heard It Through The Grapevine reprise de Gladys Knight & the Pips sera en tête des charts. Après le décès de Tammi Terrell atteinte d'une tumeur au cerveau, Marvin Gaye entame une dépression. Après de longs mois de solitude et de réflexion, il revient avec le nouvel opus What's Going On en 1971.
