Onika Tanya Maraj est née le 8 décembre 1984 à Saint-James, sur l'île de Trinité-et-Tobago aux Caraïbes. Elle rejoint ses parents partis à New-York à l'âge de cinq ans. Un climat de violence s'installe sous la coupe d'un père habitué aux excès, Nicki Minaj se réfugie alors dans la musique et dans un monde où elle se crée des "doubles" fantasmatiques. Que ce soit Onika Maraj, Nicki Minaj, Harajuku Barbie, Roman Zolanski ou Nicki Teresa, qui chante, le résultat ne se fait pas attendre. Nicki Minaj joue naturellement de ses attributs féminins, endossant facilement le rôle de "bitch", cher à la rhétorique machiste du rap. Le talent de Nicki Minaj est heureusement avant tout vocal, la jeune femme ayant également le souci de bien s'entourer. Nicki Minaj a été découverte sur MySpace par Fendi, qui l'a signée sur son label Dirty Money. Après avoir collaboré avec la World Wrestling Entertainment en interprétant Lady to Mess With pour la fédération (qui deviendra le thème d'entrée de la lutteuse Victoria jusqu'à son départ de la compagnie), et après être apparue sur les séries de DVD The Carter Edition of Young Money The Come Up, Nicki a été contactée par Lil Wayne. Les deux artistes ont ensuite collaboré sur de nombreux titres de mixtapes. En avril 2007, elle sort sa première mixtape, Playtime Is Over, où elle pose comme une poupée Barbie sur la pochette. Lil Wayne apparaît sur le titre Can't Stop, Won't Stop. Nicki Minaj participe en 2010 au succès de nombreux singles, dont « Bottoms Up » de Trey Songz, avant de faire elle-même le plein avec « Your Love ». Classé n° 14 au Billboard, « Your Love » est n° 1 rap et n° 4 R&B dans le même temps. Pink Friday sort en novembre 2010 et a le profil de l'album rap à suivre.
