Le groupe est formé en 1977 par Stewart Copeland, Henry Padovani et Sting (Gordon Matthew Sumner de son vrai nom), à partir de l'idée de Stewart Copeland qui voulait rejoindre la scène Punk qui explosait à l'époque. Ils sont rejoints rapidement par Andy Summers, formant un court moment un quatuor. Henry Padovani quitte le groupe peu de temps après, les autres membres voulant s'écarter du mouvement punk. Et puis le courant ne passait pas entre Andy Summers et Henry Padovani. Le groupe va connaître le succès jusqu'à l'apogée en 1983 où le groupe recevra trois Grammy Awards, mais l'excès de tension entre ses membres va les pousser à la séparation bien qu'il n'y ait jamais eu de scission officielle. En 1986, ils se retrouvent pour essayer d'enregistrer un nouvel album mais de cette réunion deux chansons seulement seront enregistrées. La première, une refonte d'un ancien tube paru sous l'album Zenyatta Mondatta est connue sous le nom de "Don't stand so close to me 86" et est parue dans le commerce. La seconde "De Do Do Do De Da Da Da" est aussi une nouvelle version de leur chanson parue sur l'album Zenyatta Mondatta mais n'a jamais été commercialisée. Depuis lors, chacun poursuit une carrière solo non sans réaliser quelques performances ensemble comme lors du mariage de Sting avec Trudie Styler en 1992. Le 10 mars 2003, The Police a été introduit au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. En 2006, le documentaire écrit par Stewart Copeland : "Everyone stares : The Police inside out" sera présenté au Sundance Film Festival. Ce film sera ensuite mis en vente bien qu'aucune date exacte de sortie ne soit à l'ordre du jour.
