Si on demandait un jour à la plupart des musicos américains l’influence qu’a eu sur eux les chansons d’Al Green on serait sûrement étonné de l’incroyable consensus généré. Encore maintenant, Al Green est toujours présent dans les chansons, du rap au R’n’B en passant par la pop et le rock. C’est peut-être dû à cette manière bien particulière qu’il a eu de mélanger soul music et gospel (même si, quelque part, cette affirmation est une redondance), à moins que ce ne soit dans cette manière de mêler Dieu à la musique, la sensualité la plus exacerbée au blues le plus sanglotant, le funk le plus suavement transpirant à un sérieux rigide et propre. Toujours est-il qu’Al Green est un véritable monument, surtout aux Etats-Unis. Il a même tout du concept si convoité de « héros » : référence paternelle ou maternelle qu’il s’agit de démolir pour mieux y revenir. C’est Œdipe à lui tout seul, Al Green. Peut-être que Freud était branché soul funky stuff ? Allez savoir. Quoiqu’il en soit, à l’instar d’un James Brown ou d’un Stevie Wonder, Al Green est un « héros » encore vivant et bien vivant au vu de son dernier disque « Everything’s Ok » sorti en 2005 (c’est lui qui le dit). Le révérend Al Green va bien puisqu’il officie maintenant dans sa propre église où il chante et dirige les gospels tous les dimanche tout en assurant la promo de ses productions. Il s’en explique : « je vais dans mon studio d’enregistrement et j’enregistre ce que j’entend dans mon âme et mon esprit. Après, je sors dans les rues et j’essaye de chanter ce que je viens d’enregistrer et encore après, je reviens à l’église et j’essaye de prêcher ce que j’ai entendu dans les rues quand je chantais ». ...
