Après l'étonnant Dudley Perkins, Stones Throw Records, le label californien de Peanuts Butter Wolf, présente une nouvelle perle… Le premier opus solo d'Aloe Blacc, "Shine Through", sorti en 2006. Rappeur au sein du groupe Emanon, Aloe Blacc n'est pas du genre à se laisser enfermer dans des carcans musicaux. Son premier album est une ode à la diversité. Originaire du Panama, ce Californien est aussi à l'aise pour reprendre "Change Is Gonna Come" de Sam Cooke que pour chanter le blues en attendant négligemment son bus. On ne sait pas si son cœur a véritablement choisi entre la samba brésilienne du génial "Dance For Life" et la salsa cubaine magnifiée dans cette reprise en espagnol du désormais classique "No Ordinary People" de John Legend, mais le bougre sait nous faire voyager. Son album, dont le premier titre est judicieusement appelé "Whole World", offre un subtil cocktail de soul, de musiques du monde et de rap inspiré. Le titre "Caged Birdsong" est tiré du poème "Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" de Maya Angelou (Allez savoir pourquoi les oiseaux en cage chantent). Nous, on sait : pour notre plaisir. Côté collaborations, Oh No bien sûr, mais aussi Madlib et J Rawls interviennent sur ce très bel album.
