Over 1 TB of fraps recording! that was some serious stuff to render and upload - 5 hours of gameplay. I know it may be too long for some people, but it is worth every minute and split into convenient parts of about 40-50 minutes. this game is phantastic! but first things first... Alice: Madness Returns is going to be released this week! YAY! If you don't know this game you may think it is some childish disney cartoon stuff, but no way, this is entirely different. The game starts with an intro that shows how Alice's house burnt down which killed her parents, but she survived. Her guilt eventually drives her mad and she is taken care of in an asylum. While there, she uses Wonderland as a way to deal with her madness and it is your task to guide her through crazily twisted and dark stages until she defeats the Red Queen which resembles the part of her that took control after that accident and doesn't let her move on with life. So yea, the general idea behind the game is the same we know from Lewis Carroll's story of Alice. What's so interesting about this game? I love the artwork! the levels are so twisted, sometimes grotesque. Alice is not the cute little girl, in fact she looks quite evil - especially with that bloody, long kitchen knife. The level design is great too! There is a large variety of gameplay elements, the weapons are interesting and steady upgrades and her voice and speech in the cutscenes is just so great! Also, the music... it just fits together so well. For the time, the graphics were awesome. It uses the Quake 3 engine which was pretty powerful back then. I still find the graphics ok. Sure, the textures are low resolution, but there were no 2 GB graphics cards back then. The only thing that really sucks is the low polygon count of character models, but that was probably a problem with processing power that was available at the time. All in all, it stood the test of time well - especially the gameplay. controls are very smooth, difficulty is well paced and very challenging on the higher difficulty levels. you can save at any time so that's not a real trouble, but I don't see the point of reloading every other minute. for the sake of a well paced playthrough I chose medium difficulty. when I did die, I just used a quick load which is really fast. the loading times between levels are super quick on my machine as well, but since I was recording and the HD was quite busy, it slowed down a lot. there is really not much to say about this game other than: go check it out and if you like it, consider getting the new Alice game! I don't know if it will be any good, but American McGee is in charge again so I doubt it will be fail. maybe they even release an HD version of the first game, whooo! btw, I recorded it in 1600x1200 since 1200 is what my screen got (not 1080) and it's the highest resolution the game supports (without any hack). 480p looks really crappy so please watch it in 720p or higher. If you select "Original" as your resolution you will even get the 1200p version.
