As I Lay Dying est un groupe originaire de San Diego en Californie, présentement signé chez Metal Blade Records. Le groupe est plus précisément décrit comme metalcore, mélangeant les éléments du metal et du hardcore. As I lay dying est aussi le titre d'un roman de William Faulkner publié en 1930. Le titre vient du Chant XI de L'Odyssée d'Homère quand Agamemnon déclare à Ulysse : "Je cherchai à lever les mains et les laissai retomber à terre, mourant ("As I lay Dying"), percé du glaive; et la chienne s'éloigna, sans avoir le coeur, quand je m'en allais chez Hadès de me fermer les yeux de ses mains et de me clore les lèvres". As I Lay Dying est formé en 2001 à San Diego, Californie. Peu de temps après leur formation, le groupe signe avec Pluto Records et sort son premier album, Beneath the Encasing of Ashes, en juin 2001. En 2002, le groupe enregistre de nouveaux morceaux pour un split CD avec American Tragedy, sorti aussi par Pluto Records. Après l'importante tournée et une augmentation en popularité sur le marché, As I Lay Dying signe chez Metal Blade Records au début 2003. En juillet 2003, le deuxième album, Frail Words Collapse, sort, suivi par une grande tournée avec Himsa, Shadows Fall, The Black Dahlia Murder, et d'autres groupes. En juin 2005, le groupe sort le CD Shadows Are Security et vont faire la deuxième partie de Ozzfest 2005. En 2006, ils accompagnent le groupe Bullet For My Valentine lors de leur tournée européenne. Ils participent également à de nombreux festivals d'été, dont le Festival Extrême Hellfest à Clisson (44) où leur passage a été très remarqué.
