Astrud Gilberto est une chanteuse brésilienne née le 29 mars 1940, connue principalement pour chanter la samba et la bossa-nova. Astrud Weinert (son nom de jeune fille) est née dans l'état de Bahia, d'une mère brésilienne et d'un père allemand, elle a grandi à Rio de Janeiro. En 1959, elle épouse le chanteur et guitariste brésilien João Gilberto, que certains considèrent comme le père de la bossa-nova, avec qui elle part pour les États-Unis d'Amérique en 1963. C'est aux États-Unis qu'elle rencontrera Stan Getz, avec qui elle enregistrera notamment, en 1963 The Girl from Ipanama, sur une composition de Tom Jobim, qui est devenu un standard et a été repris par de nombreux artistes. Dans cette version, qui est probablement la plus connue de ce morceau, João Gilberto chante le texte original en portugais de Vinícius de Moraes (A Garota de Ipanema) et Astrud reprend ensuite avec les paroles en anglais. Peu de temps après, Astrud a une liaison avec Stan Getz et divorce de João. Dans d'autres morceaux, comme Corcovado ou One Note Samba par exemple (enregistré au "Cafe au Go Go", Greenwich Village, NYC, le 22 mai 1964, toujours avec Stan Getz), Astrud alterne textes en portugais et textes en anglais. Elle s'était faite discrète, mais revient en 96 et chante avec Etienne Daho "Les bords de Seine" et avec George Michael.
