Chan Marshall (née Charlyn Marie Marshall, le 21 janvier 1972), mieux connue sous le nom de scène Cat Power, est une chanteuse et parolière américaine originaire d'Atlanta. La musique de Cat Power a la particularité d'être relativement minimaliste et extrêmement dépouillée (ceci est particulièrement vrai pour ses premiers albums). Chan (prononcé « Shawn ») a la particularité de chanter dans un accent américain sudiste. Après avoir quitté le lycée, Chan Marshall part pour New York où on lui a demandé de faire la première partie de Liz Phair. Pendant la tournée, elle rencontra Steve Shelley de Sonic Youth et Tim Foljahn de Two Dollar Guitar. Ces deux derniers étaient d'accord pour l'aider à enregistrer sa musique. Son premier album, Dear Sir a été enregistré le même jour que son deuxième album, Myra Lee. Les deux ont été publiés avec un an d'écart, cependant, sur des labels différents. Elle a signé avec Matador Records en 1996 et sorti son troisème album, What Would The Community Think. Un single est extrait de ce nouvel album, Nude As The News, il sera également tourné un clip vidéo pour l'accompagner. En 2003 elle publie l'album You Are Free, qui comporte des participations d'Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), dont la voix est à peine reconnaissable, ainsi que de Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), qui joue de la batterie sur certaines chansons. Cet album marque une transition musicale dans la carrière de Chan Marshall avec un son plus « rock » que ses albums précédents. Un DVD sort en 2004 aux États-Unis, un melting de chansons personnelles et de reprises (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan...) filmé en caméra amateur en pleine forêt.
