The strategically placed tape that covered the models most intimate areas is the brainchild of photographer Joel Alvarez and forms part of The Black Tape Project. While the saying "less is more" may apply in most fashion situations, one designer has taken it to the extreme... Artist Joel Alvarez sent models down the runway at Miami Swim Week in rather inventive, very skimpy bikinis made of TAPE. The photographer & designer presented his range of “Swimwear,” in the form of one and two-pieces and even mankinis made of nothing but tape in bright colors and metallics. Created by the fashion house, Black Tape Project, the sticky collection may be discernible as non-bathing suits from afar, but up close it was clear that it was in fact strategically placed tape, and not fabric, that covered the models most intimate areas. Joel reveals on his website that he started his project back in 2008 after a model requested a photo shoot, in which she had been covered in black tape. How the Black Tape Project Started The Black Tape Project creator said, "I’m a Cuban American first generation, born and raised in Miami. In 2008 I was living in my car, struggling to feed myself. lost my phone and basically ran out of gas in my car and in my life, most definitely the lowest point of my existence. I was lucky to find a box hidden in my late grandfather’s house with a substantial amount of money. After many years of what I considered “the thought era” in my life, I quickly put the funds to work in hopes to correct my debts and life. With the last of the $1500, I purchased a camera and 10 years later here I am. A self-taught photographer, artist, and entrepreneur. I've managed to make a business off of my ideas and concepts for almost a decade. I'm the creator of the Black Tape Project. Some consider me the founder or a pioneer of the Genre Body Tape art. Because of my concepts I've been able to travel to over 36 countries and counting, I've been published in countless magazines, worked with directors like Michael Bay (Pain and Gain) and recording artists like Rick Ross and some of the top DJs in the world from carl cox to Afrojack to name a few."
