English/Nat Members of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong, (DAB) a pro-China political group and the Federation of Trade Unions (FTU), held two separate protests in Hong Kong expressing their anger over the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. The first protest was led by DAB leader Tsang Yok-Sing. The first group of protesters marched through the city centre, from Chater Gardens to the American consulate. At the American consulate presented a consulate representative with a petition stating " We are shocked to learn that NATO missiles hit the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia, and caused severe casualty and damage to the people and property there. We express our strong indignation and protest against such barbarous bombing of our embassy. We strongly urge NATO to stop all bombing and military actions that have already caused heavy losses to life and property to innocent civilians, and to resolve the Kosovo issue by diplomatic means". From the U.S. consulate, the marchers then proceeded to the British consulate where a British official received the same petition. Along the way marchers shouted anti-NATO slogans calling on the organisation to apologise and compensate for the bombing campaign. In a statement after the march, Tsang Yok-Sing condemned NATO's action and insisted that the way to achieve peace was through negotiation rather than bombing. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We were shocked to learn of the bombing that destroyed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. That is a very serious matter. So we very strongly protest against the bombing but what is more important, the bombing has continued for over a month. and many innocent people, many innocent civilians have been killed, property destroyed. We don't believe that violence can stop violence. We believe the issue can be resolved only by peaceful means.
