Mandarin/Nat China on Tuesday demanded the United Sates make further investigations be made into the U-S bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, which occurred last year at the height of during NATO's air war against Yugoslavia. Beijing says the U-S explanation of the bombing - that targeters mistook the embassy for a Yugoslav military target located nearby - is "very difficult to believe". Beijing's dismissive response came despite repeated U-S apologies and the C-I-A's punishment of seven officials, including the firing of one employee blamed for incorrectly targeting the embassy. Beijing is insisting that ties between Beijing and Washington can not fully recover until they get an explanation they find satisfactory. On May 7th last year, NATO's bombing of the Serbian capital Belgrade reached a new intensity. But as Belgrade rocked with explosions, a U-S B-2 bomber unleashed its laser-guided bombs upon a target whose destruction shocked the world. The Chinese Embassy in downtown Belgrade. Firefighters battled the flames, as the Chinese ambassador, away from the office at the time of the impact, looked on aghast. Three Chinese embassy workers had been killed and more than 20 injured. China has never publicly accepted U-S statements that the bombing was a mistake due to faulty intelligence. One C-I-A official has been fired and six have been disciplined for incorrectly targeting the embassy during NATO's air war against Yugoslavia. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi repeated demands for a thorough U-S investigation of the bombing, the punishment of those responsible and for a "satisfactory explanation" to be given to China. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Q:- (Not heard) The Chinese government does not accept the U-S explanation of the U-S bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia last year. If the U-S fails to continue its investigations will this have an effect on Sino-US relations? A: "We urge the U-S side to conduct deep and comprehensive investigations and to punish the perpetrator and give a satisfactory explanation to the Chinese side. Only by this can the negative influence on the Sino-US relations be eliminated." SUPERCAPTION: Sun Yuxi, Spokesman of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sun was part of a Chinese delegation that travelled to the embassy after the bombing. And his remarks underscore the perception common in China that the bombing was intentional. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Q:- (Not heard) Does the Chinese side have any other evidence or why does it reject the U-S explanation regarding the bombing? "The U-S explanation that it did not know the exact position is not justified. They say they mistook the Chinese embassy as the Yugoslav Federal Directorate of Supply and Procurement. But the Federal Directorate of Supply and Procurement was not a secret place and its location was about 500 metres away from the embassy. When I was there I saw the exterior of the two buildings, they are totally different, there is no similarity at all. Therefore the U-S side could not mix up those two buildings. So the explanation of the U-S side that just a few people neglected their duty and that the system of inspection had errors is very difficult to believe." SUPERCAPTION: Sun Yuxi, Spokesman of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Despite his demands for more investigation, Sun said China hoped to resume talks on arms control with Washington. He said that during a visit to Beijing last month, U-S National Security Adviser Sandy Berger asked to resume talks on nonproliferation and that China agreed. The two sides are now consulting on the issue.
