Chubby Checker (né Ernest Evans, le 3 octobre 1941 en Caroline du Sud, États-Unis), signe en 1958 sous son vrai nom un contrat discographique avec Cameo-Parkway Records à Philadelphie, Pensylvanie, appartenant à Kal Mann. En juin 1959, sort son premier simple "The Class/Scooldays, Oh, Schooldays pour Parkway Records (# 38 E-U) sous le pseudo Chubby Checker. Sur "The Class" il imite Fats Domino, The Coasters, Elvis Presley et les Chipmunks. En 1960, il popularisera "The Twist", reprise d'une face B d'Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, (titre repris en français par Les Chaussettes Noires : Le twist). Le titre est suivi de "Twist again" (repris par Johnny Hallyday : Viens danser le twist); Origine de son pseudonyme : Bobbie, la femme de Dick Clark avait remarqué une ressemblance avec Antoine "Fats" Domino : Fats = Chubby (synonyme); Domino = Checker (synonyme).
