Il est né à Portsmouth le 10 juillet 1942 et il est mort le 16 mai 2010. Il commence sa carrière musicale au sein du groupe Elf où il commence par jouer de la trompette et de la basse avant de se tourner vers le chant. En 1974, Ronnie James Dio participe à l'album "Butterfly Ball" de Roger Glover (le bassiste de Deep Purple) et enregistre la célèbre chanson « Love is All ». Lorsque Ritchie Blackmore quitte Deep Purple, il débauche les membres de Elf pour fonder Rainbow. Ronnie James enregistre 3 albums avec Rainbow ("Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow", "Rising" et "Long Live Rock'N'Roll) avant de quitter le groupe et de rejoindre Black Sabbath en remplacement d'Ozzy Osbourne. Il est très célèbre pour avoir inventé le signe des « cornes » utilisé par les fans de heavy metal. C'est avec Black Sabbath qu'il a popularisé ce signe, qui était à l'origine un geste de protection spirituelle contre tout personnage malveillant utilisé par sa grand-mère italienne. Après avoir enregistré deux albums studio ("Heaven And Hell", "Mob Rules") et un live ("Live Evil"), il est exclus de Black Sabbath suite à un conflit avec les autres membres du groupe. En 1983, il fonde son propre groupe, Dio, avec lequel il sort plusieurs albums dont les quatre premiers rencontreront un certain succès commercial : "Holy Diver" (1983), "The Last In Line" (1984), "Sacred Heart" (1985), "Dream Evil" (1987) et "Lock Up The Wolves" (1990). Fin 1990, il réintègre Black Sabbath. Le groupe enregistre en 1992 l'album "Dehumanizer" qui permet une résurrection commerciale du combo britannique. Mais à la suite d'une nouvelle dispute, Dio quitte le navire en novembre 1992 et reforme son groupe solo. Dio enregistre plusieurs albums durant les années 1990 et 2000 qui ne renoueront pas...
