SCHUBERT Franz (1797 - 1828) «Schubert, ou le "classique" du romantisme» : la formule du musicologue Alfred Einstein résume bien la position originale de Schubert dans l'histoire de la musique. Franz Peter Schubert, compositeur autrichien, né le 31 janvier 1797 à Vienne, mort le 19 novembre 1828 à Vienne. Bien que mort à 31 ans, Schubert est un des grands compositeurs du XIXe siècle et le maître incontesté du lied de langue allemande. Franz Peter Schubert est né à Vienne — plus précisément à Lichtenthal — le 31 janvier 1797. Il est le 9ème enfant d'une famille de 12. Son père Franz Theodor, instituteur, lui donne ses premières leçons de violon, tandis que son frère Ignaz lui apprend le piano. De 1808 à 1813, il est chanteur dans le chœur de la chapelle impériale de Vienne et étudie au Konvikt (école de formation des chanteurs de la chapelle de la cour). Il devient ainsi l'élève d'Antonio Salieri, directeur de la musique à la Cour. Pendant cette période de formation, il commence à composer, malgré les réticences de son père qui lui interdit même de rentrer à la maison, alors que sa mère est en train de mourir (1811-1813). Schubert écrit d'abord pour le piano (dès 1810), puis pas moins de huit quatuors à cordes, quelques ouvertures et des lieder. En 1812, il devient l'élève de Salieri, qu'il gardera en estime pendant toute sa vie. En 1813, fortement influencé par Haydn, mais surtout par Mozart, il compose sa première symphonie ; deux ans plus tard viennent son premier opéra, sa première messe et son premier chef-d'œuvre dans le domaine du lied : Marguerite au rouet (Gretchen am Spinnrade) (19 octobre 1814), alors qu'il connaît une histoire d'amour malheureuse avec la soprano soliste de sa première messe, Therese Grob....
