Originaire du Wiltshire, dans l'ouest de l'Angleterre, il est élevé dans une famille de musiciens semi-professionnels et apprend très tôt à jouer du piano et de la guitare. Avec plus de 1 000 concerts à son actif dès l'âge de 15 ans, plus deux albums autoproduits, l'artiste fait figure de surdoué dans le milieu musical. En 2003, il sort son premier album produit par une grande major : Twentysomething. C'est un succès immédiat. En 2004, il participe à la bande originale du film Bridget Jones : l'âge de raison. En 2005, il est nominé aux prestigieux Grammy awards et sort son album Catching Tales. En 2009, il participe a l'interprétation de l'OST du film de Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino, avec qui il chante en duo.
