Né le 23 juin 1977, Jason Mraz a grandi dans la banlieue de Richmond,en Virginie.Très tot touché par le virus de la musique, il décide d'aller étudier à la American Musical and Dramatic Academy à New York.Il y restera une petite année, le temps de se rendre compte que sa véritable passion est le chant, et de s'y consacrer entièrement.Cette année lui aura quand meme permis de rencontrer son meilleur ami, Bushwalla, qui lui apprendra à jouer de la guitare ( il commence à 18ans mais se révèle très vite doué pour cet instrument,qui l'accompagnera toujours sur scène par la suite). Après cette année à New York, Jason rentre en Virginie mais ne peut s'empecher de penser à la musique et décide d'aller tenter sa chance. Il se rend donc à San Diego, en Californie,où de nombreux jeunes talents se font remarquer.Il participe à un grand nombre de soirées Open Mic et y rencontrera Toca 'Joel' Riviera, percussioniste, et Ian Sheridan,contrebassiste.Ensemble ils squatteront tous les jeudis soirs la scène du fameux Java Joe's Coffeshop (fameux car cette période est à l'origine de très bonnes vidéos et enregistrements des débuts de Jason Mraz à l'état pur) et se feront un public d'habitués.Parallèlement, Jason autoproduit quelques EP et sort son premier album: Live at Java Joe's( une petite merveille soit dit en passant). Peu à peu ses titres commencent à passer en radio à San Diego, notament You and I both, et lui permettent de signer chez Elektra pour son premier album "Waiting For My Rocket To Come". The Remedy et You and I both deviennent très vite des tubes aux Etats Unis.S'en suivent alors une tournée et des premières parties, dont celle du Dave Matthews Band, et une CD/DVD live "Tonight Not Again" à voir absolument!
