HARDIN COUNTY- by Haley Bull A Lumberton man convicted of murder is preparing for his entry into the state prison system to begin serving a 60-year sentence. Cody Michael Davis, 27, stabbed and killed his mothers fiance, Owen Goodman, 26. Thursday, it took the jury 30 minutes to reach a guilty verdict in the murder trial and one hour to decide punishment. "My brother was one of the kindest persons I ever me. He was as good as gold," Goodman's brother, Chris Goodman, said. "He was not only my baby brother but one of my best friends." Police found Goodman's body October 4, 2014 at a home on Bryan Lane in Lumberton and Davis covered in blood. According to a forensic pathologist, Goodman suffered 85 stab wounds, most to his head, 17 to his eyes. Davis admitted to the killing, telling jurors he repeatedly stabbed the 26-year old after knocking a knife out of Goodman's hand during an altercation. Davis' attorney argued to jurors it was self-defense, and later in court, he told them it was a crime of passion. The two men had a history of disagreements. Prosecutors argued that wasn't the case and jurors agreed. "Very happy with the trial and the way it proceeded, very pleased with the outcome. It gives a lot of good closure for the victim's family," Hardin County District Attorney David Sheffield said. Goodman's family said it thought Davis' sentence was not long enough. "I feel like Cody should have got life in prison. My brother's no longer here he won't be able to start his life over," Chris Goodman said. The pain from a life taken was made worse when Goodman's mother lost her battle to cancer just months after the killing. "If my mom was the heart, my baby brother was the soul of this family and we've been torn apart by this," Chris Goodman said. "I feel like justice was served, I know my brother can't come back. I pray for Cody that he finds peace and I hope he seeks salvation while he's in prison." Davis could have received up to life in prison. He must serve at least 30 years before he is eligible for parole. Update 4:18 -- The jury decides Cody Davis will serve 60 years in prison. That was option 3, meaning the jury did not find Davis' crime to be a crime of passion.
