Lorsque l’on évoque Leonard Cohen, le monde se partage immédiatement en deux camps : les contres (ceux qui le trouvent triste et barbant) et les pour, les admirateurs, ceux qui voient en lui un grand auteur-compositeur, un spécimen unique dans l’histoire du rock. Mais dans un cas comme dans l’autre, Leonard Cohen ne laisse personne indifférent, ce qui est sans doute la marque de son immense talent. Un talent dont la parution du CD More Best Of, un portrait de l’artiste couvrant les années 84 à 97 permet une nouvelle fois de mesurer toute l’étendue Leonard Cohen est né en 1934 dans la province du Québec, à Westmount, un quartier riche et anglophone de Montréal, d’une famille juive russo-polonaise. Il est très tôt passionné par la littérature et la poésie où ses goûts ne se limitent pas uniquement aux auteurs anglo-saxons. Leonard Cohen : Quand j’étais jeune j’ai commencé à lire vraiment avec les romanciers français comme Camus et Sartre comme tout le monde ! Je lis très peu de poésie maintenant, mais j’étais très influencé par quelques poètes. Parmi eux Federico Garcia Lorca, le grand poète espagnol, William Butler Yeats, le poète irlandais et… la Bible, les poésies de la Bible, beaucoup. A 17 ans Leonard Cohen entreprend des études d’histoire à l’université de Mc Gill, tout en écrivant ses premiers poèmes. Parallèlement il s’intéresse déjà à la musique et il participe à la formation d’un trio de country-musique et de folk "Les Buckskin Boys".
