Nathaniel Adams Coles — surnommé Nat King Cole — est un chanteur et pianiste de jazz et de rhythm and blues né à Montgomery, Alabama, États-Unis d'Amérique, le 17 mars 1919, et mort à Santa Monica, Californie, États-Unis d'Amérique, le 15 février 1965. Il est l'un des plus grand crooners des années 1950. Ses parents, installés à Chicago, l'initient très tôt à la musique, en particulier sa mère qui dirigeait le chœur de l'Église baptiste où son père était pasteur. À 12 ans, il commence à prendre des leçons particulières de piano et tient l'orgue de l'église. Il monte son premier groupe avec son frère Eddie et se produit dans un club. Ils parviennent à enregitrer quatre titres passés inaperçus pour Decca en 1936. Il intègre une revue musicale en 1937, puis part pour Los Angeles où il forme son premier trio avec Oscar Moore et Wesley Prince. C'est à cette époque qu'il hérite de son surnom de « Nat King Cole » qui lui aurait été donné par un propriétaire de club à Los Angeles. En 1939, il enregistre avec les King Cole Swingers quatre disques pour le label Davis & Schwengler. Puis il recrutent un batteur et sortent « I Like To Riff » et « On The Sunny Side Of The Street » sur Ammor. En 1940, ils signe chez Decca, et obtiennent leur premier succès d'estime l'année suivante avec « Sweet Lorraine » sous le nom de The Nat King Cole Trio. Le groupe devient quartet, puis quintet, et les enregistrement s'enchaînent à New York (« That Ain't Right », « All For You »). En 1943, de retour à Los Angeles, Cole fait ses débuts au cinéma dans Here Comes Helmer et Pistol Packin' Mama.
