Description of the artist Nine Inch Nails
Nine Inch Nails est un groupe de rock industriel américain créé en 1988 par Trent Reznor. En réalité Nine Inch Nails est Trent Reznor, qui est bien souvent rejoint sur scène par des membres plus ou moins réguliers comme : Richard Patrick (Filter, période allant jusqu'à Broken), Charlie Clouser, Robin Finck, Danny Lohner, Jerome Dillon, Aaron North, Josh Freese, Jeordie White (aka Twiggy Ramirez, Marilyn Manson), Alessandro Cortini. Sa musique, dont les textes revêtent une grande importance & évidemment très influencé à la base par les convictions de Reznor dont - par exemple - la théorie de l'Acte gratuit de Nietzsche mais aussi plusieurs auteurs contemporains; se distingue par un mélange entre extrême brutalité et extrême fragilité. C'est la musique de la souffrance, de la mélancolie et du spleen, symbolisée par des morceaux aussi différents que Wish sur l'album Broken ; Closer, March of the Pigs et Hurt sur l'album Downward Spiral ; Ruiner bien sûr, ou encore La Mer sur l'album The Fragile. L'album Year Zero est accompagné d'une campagne de marketing viral impressionnante. Le 8 octobre 2007, Trent Reznor annonce sur son site que Nine Inch Nails est devenu un groupe totalement indépendant, après 18 ans de majors. Il ajoute qu'il vendra bientôt ses albums en ligne autour de 4-5 dollars. En mars 2008, un nouvel album Ghosts I-IV est disponible en téléchargement pour 5$ sur http://ghosts.nin.com/. Deux mois plus tard, l'album The Slip est disponible en téléchargement gratuit et distribué sous licence Creative Commons (autorisant le partage en peer-to-peer, entre autres).
