C’est le 21 janvier 2002 aux environs de 20 heures (heure de Los Angeles) que Peggy Lee est morte à l'âge de 81 ans, dans sa maison de Bel Air, des suites de problèmes cardiaques dont elle souffrait depuis environ trois ans. D’origines norvégienne et suédoise mêlées, Peggy Lee – de son vrai nom Norma Deloris Egström – était née le 26 mai 1920 à Jamestown, Dakota du Nord. Elle est le septième enfant d’une famille qui en comptera huit. Son père, Marvin Egström, travaille pour la compagnie de chemins de fer Midland Continental Railroad. Sa mère meurt alors que Norma n’a que quatre ans. Quand son père se remarie, la petite fille a des rapports difficiles avec sa belle-mère. Elle chante dans la chorale de l’école, celle de l’église, puis celle du lycée et, poussée par les encouragements de ses pairs et de ses professeurs, elle travaille d'abord en 1936 avec l'orchestre de Jack Wardlaw, puis elle prend la direction de Hollywood en 1938, avec 18 dollars en poche et une carte de transport ferroviaire empruntée à son père. Elle est brièvement engagée au Jade Room (ou Club), sur Hollywood Boulevard, mais ne parvient pas à percer, et doit prendre un emploi de serveuse. Elle repart finalement en direction du Dakota et, même si elle doit travailler en parallèle dans une usine de pain, décroche un emploi de chanteuse dans une station radio de Fargo, Dakota du Nord, la WDAY. C’est le directeur de cette station, Ken Kennedy, qui lui donnera son nom de Peggy Lee. Elle part ensuite pour Minneapolis, où elle chante au Radisson Hotel, prend part à un show radio patronné par la Standard oil, et chante avec la formation de Sven Olson. The late great Peggy Lee, a favorite of mine (I'm a huge Jazz fan). Peggy was a singer in The Benny Goodman Orchestra before going solo. You may also know her as the voice of the Siamese Cats in Disneys 'Lady and The Tramp.'
