Natural Sound Hundreds of Filipino Chinese gathered outside the U-S Embassy in Manila on Friday to protest NATO's bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade last week. The protest is just the latest in a series of demonstrations at U-S missions around the world following the death of three Chinese civilians at their embassy in Belgrade. The U-S and NATO have apologized for the mistake and has agreed to hold talks with China to ease tensions. About 500 ethnic Chinese, including volunteer firemen, sounded the alarm of fire trucks and hurled eggs at the U-S Embassy Friday to protest last week's bombing of the Chinese mission in Belgrade. Several protesters heckled two U-S Embassy officers, who received a letter from the demonstrators, but police said the rally was generally peaceful. A U-S Embassy official later handed a letter of apology to the protesters. Demonstrators shouted "Stop the Bombing" and "Stop Killing" while a protest leader read a statement condemning the Chinese Embassy bombing and the U-S-led NATO attacks in Yugoslavia. In a flower box in front of the embassy, protesters placed black and white portraits of the three Chinese journalists killed in the bombing, and lit candles before them. SOUNDBITE: (English) "That's why don't bomb. Don't bomb human beings! That's human beings that they kill. The young brothers and sisters." SUPER CAPTION: Protestor, Vox pops Friday's protest is the second to be staged at the U-S Embassy in Manila in connection with the bombing of the Chinese mission. On Tuesday, about 70 activists burned a U-S flag and pelted the U-S Embassy with rotten mangoes. President Bill Clinton has apologized publicly for what he said was a "tragic mistake" and has agreed to talk with Chinese President Jiang Zemin to ease tensions between Beijing and Washington.
