Pixies est un groupe de rock américain actif durant les années 1980 et le début des années 1990. Après une parenthèse de onze ans le groupe s'est reformé en 2004 pour donner une série de concerts. Depuis l'origine il est constitué de 4 membres : Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson, dit Frank Black (voix et guitare), Joey Santiago (guitare), Kim Deal (voix et basse) et David Lovering (batterie). Leur style musical a influencé de nombreux aspects du rock alternatif des années 1990. Le groupe est souvent considéré comme étant le précurseur du mouvement grunge. Leur style est caractérisé par un mélange de couplets calmes et de refrains endiablés. Ce procédé sera popularisé plus tard par Nirvana. Le groupe a été formé à Boston en 1986 par Joey Santiago et Black Francis (né Charles Thompson IV). Ils firent la connaissance de Kim Deal (alias Mrs John Murphy) grâce à une petite annonce demandant une combinaison inhabituelle d'influences musicales, faisant référence a Hüsker Dü et Peter, Paul and Mary. C'est Kim Deal qui leur présente le batteur David Lovering. Joey Santiago, qui est d'origine philippine, a une affection particulière pour les mots qu'il ne comprend pas parfaitement. Il propose, après avoir feuilleté un dictionnaire le nom Pixies in Panoply, qu'ils raccourcirent presque immédiatement pour Pixies (se traduisant en français par "Les Lutins"). Les Pixies commencèrent à jouer dans la région de Boston. Lors d'un concert avec les Throwing Muses, le groupe fut remarqué par Gary Smith, un producteur travaillant aux studios Fort Apache. This was done for a film production class assignment that required us to make a "cinepoem" that made the audience feel some emotion. So I decided to make my video using "Where is my Mind?" song and made the footage have a stark black and white.
