Né le 15 mars 1962 à Manhattan (New York, USA), son vrai nom est Terence Trent Howard. Il a opté pour le nom de Terence Trent d'Arby en référence à son père adoptif, le révérend James Benjamin Darby. Sous l'influence de ses parents musiciens(son père était guitariste et sa mère, Frances Darby, chanteuse de gospel), il intègre très jeune une école pour enfants doués et chante dans des chorales avec un talent évident. Solitaire, Terence se réfugie souvent dans son imaginaire et se met au sport (boxe anglaise) pour sortir de sa solitude. Poussé par ses parents, il étudie le journalisme. Après le lycée, il part faire son service militaire en Allemagne, dans le régiment où avait été incorporé Elvis Presley. Après 18 mois, Terence quitte l’armée en 1985. Durant son séjour en Allemagne, il travaille avec le groupe de Funk/Pop allemand "The Touch" dans les studios FAR de Frank Farian, enregistrant l'album "Love On Time" (1984) sur lequel on trouve le single "I Want To Know (International Lady)" qui sera réédité en 1989. En 1986, il se rend à Londres (Angleterre) où il rejoint le groupe "The Bojangels" puis enregistre une démo qui va le conduire à la maison de disques CBS. Il obtient son premier succès grâce au titre "If You Let Me Stay", sorti en Angleterre en février 1987. Dans la foulée, paraissent les singles "Wishing Well" (Juin 1987 en Angleterre et n°1 aux USA en 1988), "Dance Little Sister" (Septembre 1987) et "Sign Your Name" (Décembre 1987), tous tirés de son premier album "Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby" (Juillet 1987). Ce premier album va rencontrer un succès populaire mondial important (12 millions de copies vendues à ce jour). Terence va remporter un Grammy Award (aux USA) en mars 1988 ...
