Formé initialement en 1981 par son chanteur Ian Astbury sous le nom de "Southern Death Cult", lequel sortit plusieurs singles puis sous l'appellation de "Death Cult" avec l'adjonction du guitariste Billy Duffy (ex Theatre of hate). Évoluant un temps dans une mouvance gothique, la formation se forgea une nouvelle identité autour de ses deux leaders naturels, Astbury et Duffy, qui alliaient des qualités musicales et un look supérieurs à la moyenne, leur permettant de se détacher du lot des nombreux groupes évoluant sur les scènes londoniennes. Elle adopta en 1983, l'appellation épurée de "The Cult", moins morbide et plus fédératrice. Le premier album, Dreamtime, (1984) comportait une influence new wave encore dominante et put être perçu comme un disque transitoire. Dans Love (1985) s'effectue la mue en rock psychédélique avec des riffs plus marqués et des solos plus présents qui servent des compositions solides non dénuées de mélodies tels les morceaux Nirvana, Phoenix, She sells sanctuary, Brother wolf, sister moon. L'apparence des musiciens est alors assez hybride : chemises à jabots ou psychédéliques, coupe punk pour Duffy, cheveux longs avec tresses pour Astbury, bijoux à sautoirs, breloques et insignes divers pour tous, les clips faisant, quant à eux, la part belle au revival psychédélique. L'album suivant, qui aurait du s'appeler Peace, est enregistré aux studios Manor par Steve Brown et s'inscrit par ses arrangements dans la lignée de Love. Toutefois, à l'écoute des bandes, le producteur Rick Rubin recommande une autre optique plus hard rock avec des rythmiques plus lourdes et carrées et obtient le principe d'un ré-enregistrement intégral[réf. nécessaire].
