The Kinks est un groupe de rock anglais des années 1960. Fondé à Londres en 1963, c'est, avec The Beatles, The Who et The Rolling Stones l'un des plus grands groupes de cette période. Certaines de leurs chansons sont devenues des classiques, telles que « Waterloo Sunset » « You Really Got Me », « Sunny Afternoon » et « Lola ». Deux frères, Ray Davies et Dave Davies, grandissent dans Muswell Hill, quartiers pauvres et insalubres de Londres. De cette enfance auprès des petites gens, les deux frères vont en retirer des conclusions bien différentes : L'aîné Raymond deviendra très critique, secret, voir même renfermé; le plus jeune sera toujours pénétré d'une profonde rage et d'un besoin de profiter le plus de sa condition. Les deux frères fréquentent volontiers les pubs, enviant les bluesmen et les musiciens de skiffle qui s'y produisent. Ray, continuant ses études, opte pour une école d'art britannique qui fleurit dans l'Angleterre des années 1960. Un enseignant l'incite à faire quelque chose de ce don qu'il possède, son talent pour l'écriture. C'est alors qu'il suit l'idée de son frère de fonder un groupe de musique. Dave persuade son ami d'enfance Peter Quaife de se joindre à eux pour tenir la basse. Une annonce est alors passée dans la presse musicale spécialisée pour recruter un batteur. Ils choisissent Mick Avory, ancien batteur des The Rolling Stones. Le groupe joue des classiques de blues américain dans les pubs, et porte le nom de Ravens. Un soir de l'année 1963, Larry Page les remarque et leur propose de devenir leur gérant. Dès leur entrée dans le monde du show biz, les membres du groupe se font remarquer.
