The Stranglers est un groupe de rock new wave britannique formé en 1973, qui sera associé au mouvement Punk puis New Wave. A son origine il est composé de quatre membres : Hugh Cornwell (chant, guitare), le franco-britannique Jean-Jacques Burnel (chant, basse), Dave Greenfield (claviers) et Jet Black (percussions). Ce groupe, nommé au départ The Guildford Stranglers, nait à l'époque du Punk britannique caractérisé surtout par les groupes tels les Sex Pistols ou encore les Clash, les Jam et The Damned etc. Les Stranglers se démarquent rapidement de ces groupes aussi bien musicalement que vestimentairement. Des spécialistes parlent alors de genre "melodic post punk". La particularité du son des Stranglers se fait, à la base, essentiellement sur deux choses : le jeu de basse de Jean-Jacques Burnel et les claviers de Dave Greenfield aux cascades de notes faisant rappeler un certain Ray Manzarek des Doors. À noter que c'est ce groupe qui a inspiré le plus les Stranglers. Dans leurs chansons, on va retrouver des titres au rythme de valse (Golden Brown, Outside Tokyo,...) qu'on peut mettre en parallèle avec par exemple "Wintertime Love" des Doors. L'album préféré de Jean-Jacques Burnel est « L.A. Woman ». Même le jeu de guitare de Hugh Cornwell rappelle celui de Robby Krieger, le guitariste des Doors aux inspirations blues et flamenco. Après les quatre premiers albums contenant un grand nombre de succès ayant passé toutes les décennies (Get a Grip, Hangin' around, No more heroes, Something better change, The Raven, Tank, etc.), les artistes qui le composent se tournent à la fois vers des expérimentations musicales mais aussi vers un style tout simplement plus pop.
