We take you through the top 5 fitness myths that you may believe are true, but are actually a whole load of nonsense! There are many rumours and mis-information circulating around the internet, fitness centres, gyms and work places across the country. The important thing to remember is that not everyone is an expert. We like to think we know a thing or two about exercise and fitness industry, so let us dis-spell a few of the most popular myths. MYTH 1: Carbs make you fat No. If you over eat on any macro-nutrient such as carbs, protein or fats themselves, then you may gain weight. However, if you eat the right amount of carbs for your body type, you will not get fat. MYTH 2: Green tea burns fat What green tea doesn't directly burn fat. It can help you expel water, but not lose fat. What does burn fat is being in a calorie deficit so that your body has to use fat storage for energy. MYTH 3: Eat clean to get lean Again, nonsense. You could eat as much clean food as you like, and still add fat. It's all about calorie consumption. If you are consistently in a calorie surplus, you will add body fat. The key to getting lean is to calculate your macros each day. You could potential eat pizza and chocolate every day but as long as you stay in a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. This isn't the recommended way as it could have other potential negative impacts with your mood, skin etc, but it certainly is possible. MYTH 4: High reps for toning, low reps for getting big Both high reps and low reps can increase muscle. Your muscles do two things: shrink or grow, and is all dependent on the type of training you do. To build muscle mass and grow you need progressive overload. One extra set, one extra rep or an increase in the weight lifted will help to build muscle over time and give you that 'toned' look. MYTH 5: Cardio is necessary for fat loss For fat loss, cardio is 100% necessary. What is needed is a good calorie deficit, which can be utilised from your training programme, diet or cardio. It may be used to accelerate and burn more calories over time, but it certainly isn't needed.
