Will Smith fut adopté dans le quartier Wynnefield de Philadelphie. Il est le second de quatre enfants, les deux derniers étant des jumeaux, Harry et Ellen.Il est d'origine haïtienne et jamaïcaine. Ses parents lui donnèrent une éducation chrétienne. Il est fermement opposé aux croyances des fondamentalistes chrétiens; par exemple, il les critique dans le titre Ms. Holy Roller de son album Lost & Found. Dès son enfance, Smith s'avère être un enfant intelligent et charismatique, si bien que ses camarades du lycée Overbrook le surnommaient déjà "Prince", à cause du charme dont il faisait preuve pour se sortir des ennuis. À l’âge de 12 ans, Smith est grandement influencé par Eddie Murphy et les nouveaux héros du hip-hop. À 16 ans il rencontre Jeff Townes à une fête; ils deviennent amis proches et commencent à chanter ensemble, Jeff en tant que DJ Jazzy Jeff et Smith en tant que Fresh Prince. Elève brillant, Smith fait ses études secondaires à la Julia Reynolds Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School, école réputée de Philadelphie; il refuse plus tard une bourse d'études du Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) pour se consacrer plus sérieusement à sa carrière musicale.
