Le groupe de Pop/Rock français formé en 1996 au Versailles, France est composé de Thomas Mars (voix), Laurent Brancowitz (guitare), Deck D'Arcy (basse) et Christian Mazzalai (guitare). C'est l'un des groupes de rock français les plus populaires dans le monde. A ne pas confondre avec le groupe folk-rock légendaire roumain Phoenix (créé en 1966 et interdit par le gouvernement communiste en 1977). Le groupe a rencontré Thomas Hedlund lors d'une tournée en Suède où son groupe "the Deportees" a fait la 1re partie de Phoenix. Ce dernier est par ailleurs aussi percussionniste pour le groupe de post-hardcore suedois Cult of Luna. Les trois membres fondateurs du groupe font connaissance au collège. Vers l'âge de 12 ans Deck D'Arcy et Thomas Mars jouent déjà de la musique ensemble lorsque Christian Mazzalai les rejoint. Ils fréquentent ensuite tous les trois le lycée Hoche et créent un groupe en 1991 Ils sont rejoints par la suite par Laurent Brancowitz, le frère de Christian, qui vient de quitter le groupe Darlin' (qui deviendra Daft Punk un peu plus tard). Le groupe est officiellement fondé en 1995 et prend le nom de Phoenix en 1997. En 1997, ils sortent un 45T autoproduit sur leur propre structure (Ghettoblaster) : Party Time/City Lights. C'est un tirage limité ( 500 exemplaires ) destiné à démarcher les maisons de disques. Cela leur permet de signer avec le label Source, une sous-division de Virgin. En 1998, ils accompagnent alors le groupe Air pour leur single Sexy Boy et Kelly Watch the Stars sur les plateaux de télévision et en concert. Leur premier single "officiel", Heatwave, sort en 1999.
